DFB Cup Match - Over 40,000 enthusiastic Leverkusen supporters cheer on their team in the BayArena.
Approximately 40,000 excited fans gathered at the BayArena to honor Bayer Leverkusen's double-winning team. The players, along with their coach, Xabi Alonso, arrived in the city from Berlin on Sunday and first signed the Leverkusen City Golden Book before making their way to the stadium in an open-air truck. Thousands of fans gathered along the route to cheer them on.
With their first-ever German soccer championship title under their belts, Bayer Leverkusen lifted the DFB Cup on Saturday after defeating 1. FC Kaiserslautern 1:0 in the final.
At 5 pm sharp, Alonso, team captain Lukas Hradecky, and defender Jonathan Tah emerged from the players' tunnel, Hradecky carrying the championship trophy and Tah carrying the DFB Cup. Alonso stood in the middle between the two, as each player was introduced individually to the crowd. This was all set to the song "Don't Stop" by the American band Red Hot Chili Peppers, which played while it rained overhead.
WDR co-commentator and long-time Bayer goalkeeper Rüdiger Vollborn, who had earlier been overcome with emotion, had to take a brief moment to collect himself. Vollborn said, "I have dreamed of this day for so long, that they finally have something tangible again." Having been part of the team that won the UEFA Cup in 1988, the 61-year-old now works for the club as a fan representative and club archivist.
