Fierce Weather: Major Downpour Hits the Region - Over 300 people have died due to floods in Eastern Africa.
No signs of relief are visible in the East African nations dealing with extended weekly rainfall. The death toll from this rainfall has climbed into the hundreds, encompassing victims in Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, and Uganda. The Kenyan government representative states that at least 169 people have perished. The cabinet in Nairobi had a meeting specifically to address potential measures.
During a visit to Mai Mahiu in the Rift Valley, where forty-eight people lost their lives on Monday when a dam broke and another twenty-six people remain unaccounted for, Kenyan President William Ruto urged residents in flood-prone or landslide-prone regions to relocate within the next two days. The Kenyan meteorological agency forecasts more heavy rainfall in the next seven days.
Besides rising water levels on rivers, the East African Great Lakes are also being impacted by the continued downpours. The disrupted roadways and impassable bridges are affecting transportation of goods in East Africa, for example from Uganda to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tanzania's coastal regions are deemed highly susceptible. Alongside constant heavy rainfall, there have been persistent thunderstorms and intense waves. In Arusha and Manyara, renowned for their safari tourism in East Africa, there have been several landslides recently.
