Oregon Lottery offers unusual options for summer sports betting
The Oregon Lottery offers non-traditional sports fans an unusual array of betting options through its DraftKings sportsbook.
With the Fourth of July holiday and summer travel high on the agenda for many Americans, some states are taking different approaches to getting people involved in the vast world of sports betting. Oregon State comes to the scene with some familiar offerings.
One example is the USCO World Championship at the end of July. Then there’s the Tour de France, which starts on July 1, and the MLB Home Run Derby, which starts on July 10.
Generally speaking, the summer is not the busiest time for sports betting, but there are plenty of opportunities to make interesting bets on lesser-known events,” said Kerry Hemphill, sports betting product manager for the Oregon Lottery.
Since we mentioned Independence Day, we should also mention Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. To be fair, betting on hot dogs isn't an option unique to Oregon. Since 2020, states such as Arizona, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Colorado and Michigan have legalized betting on events with licensed sportsbooks.
By the way, Joey Chestnut will be back to defend his title this year. Chestnut was king of the Coney Island event for seven consecutive years and won 15 times.
On the women's side, Miki Sudo has won eight of nine tournament titles since Nathan's created the women's division in 2011.
States measure competitive nutrition markets
Eating competition isn't just a Coney Island thing. There are 17 major eating competitions happening across the country this year, according to a study by Gambling.com
Nevada leads the pack of states exiting the competitive grocery market. Rounding out the top five are Illinois, Indiana, Maryland and Tennessee. Research also shows there are 3 MLE (Major League of Nations Diet) eaters in Nevada.
Hemp Hill, sports betting product manager for the Oregon Lottery, believes lesser-known sporting events can be lucrative and provide fun and the opportunity to win. Call them the secret to summer fun without worrying about indigestion.
Back to the Beaver State
Oregon launched digital sports betting in October 2019, and the state lottery is a powerhouse.
While the state relies on alternative gaming to keep fans entertained this summer, tribal casinos are not expected to expand. In April, Gov. Tina Kotek expressed opposition to the expansion of tribal casinos and the expansion of gambling in general.
