OpenAI's GPT poised for release on iOS 18

Apple is definitely behind when it comes to AI technology. While Microsoft and Google have released and integrated their own generative AI tech into their vast platforms, Apple has been quiet on the topic. This is surprising since AI has been generating a lot of buzz, and Apple is one of the world's most valuable tech companies. Meta's products are even incorporating invasive AI features.

However, if the rumors are to be believed, Apple is about to make some noise. It's anticipated that Apple will unveil major AI features as part of its upcoming software updates, such as iOS 18. We don't even need to rely on hearsay or unconfirmed reports to guess this; Apple researchers have shared some of their work on AI, including their proprietary AI model and tools like an AI image editor and an AI image animator.

Although Apple has made significant progress in AI, it may not have the resources to execute all its future AI features without some help. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the company is in talks with OpenAI to outsource some of its AI processing needs. If a deal were to go through, Apple could use OpenAI's GPT models for tasks like running a chatbot similar to ChatGPT in iOS, as well as other new features.

This isn't the first time Apple has considered collaborating with OpenAI for AI processing. We also understand that the company is in discussions with Google about licensing Gemini for some of its AI endeavors. Apple seems to be contemplating all its options, and might even choose another company to collaborate with.

Considering WWDC is just over two months away, one would think Apple would be more concerned about the timing of these deals. This is where they'll showcase what they've been working on in the AI field. ChatGPT was launched at the end of 2022, and it started this AI craze; Apple will join the party a year and a half late, which could make a statement about how seriously they're taking AI in the short term.

It's possible that Apple is waiting until it can handle more AI tasks internally before committing to outsourcing AI processing. If they can run an AI-enhanced Siri on their own devices, that would be better for them than relying on Google's or OpenAI's tech. Any outsourced AI would likely need to be handled in the cloud, risking the security of user data. Local AI would keep your data on your iPhone, while using cloud-based AI could expose your information to Google, OpenAI, or any other potential partner Apple collaborates with.By doing
