Online competitor triumphs at PokerStars Championship in Barcelona.
Sebastian Sörensson, age 27, might just be the most efficient poker pro out there, given his 50% success rate in live tournaments. This week, he triumphed in the PokerStars Championship Main Event in Barcelona. He bested more than 1600 other players and took home almost a million euros.
Interestingly, Sörenssen had gained entry to the tournament through an online qualifier on PokerStars, spending only 215 euros. No one had anticipated his achievement beforehand. Before becoming known on the live poker scene, Sörenssen had been working in a department store near Lund in Malmö.
Surprisingly, two clear frontrunners, Andre Akkari and Raffaele Sorrentino, were present at the final table. However, they eventually finished in third and fifth place, respectively. Sorrentino is famously notorious for winning in Monte Carlo. Despite his third-place finish, he still managed to acquire over 850,000 euros, thanks to a deal he struck with winner Sörenssen and runner-up Lachezar Petkov. Akkari, however, ended up in fifth place.
Sörenssen was in awe as he made his way through the competition. The grandeur of the Casino Barcelona setting and the massive number of participants overwhelmed him. Despite his newbie status, he made mistakes like folding before it was his turn and sometimes forgetting to post his blinds. However, he maintained his composure throughout and eventually faced off against Petkov in the heads-up game.
"I still can't believe it. Up until the third day, I thought: What's going on here?"
The young Swede had been involved in gambling since he was 18. He'd spent his time playing poker and betting online. His willingness to take risks eventually paid off, as he made it as a poker pro. Just a few months back in November 2016, he had wagered his entire sports betting bankroll of around 3500 euros on Donald Trump winning the election, which turned out to be a profitable bet.
Now, Sörenssen, the nearly-million-dollar prize winner, is thinking about a promising career in poker. He's even taken to challenging heads-up master, Doug Polk, for a face-off. However, he remains kind-hearted, sending out a special message to his colleagues back home while expressing his astonishment in the winner's interview.
