Alfred Draxler pens an essay. - One should not mock Mats Hummels!
Thoughts vary greatly over whether DFB had Granny Lotti or Frauke Ludowig revealing the European Championship squad. Some believed it to be amazing. Others, such as me, found it absurd. It could even be dangerous!
Take Mats Hummels, for instance. He discovered on Tuesday that he wouldn't be called by national coach Nagelsmann. The following day, however, he was named on "TV Total" by host Sebastian Pufpaff to the applause of the crowd.
What was it like in the past? In those bygone days?
In Sepp Herberger's day, invitations were still sent through the mail. Bosses back then wrote personal letters when ejecting players. Like this one to Helmut Rahn on July 1, 1960:
"Your behavior over the past weeks and months has shaken my trust in you and your dependability...The invitation you received the day before yesterday to participate in the international match against Iceland is now invalid...You will remain completely untouched by me in the future." Rummms!
Later, players would watch the ZDF sports studio. Here, the final roster was announced, including withdrawals and new additions.
There was an incident before the 1986 World Cup when team leader Beckenbauer had to eliminate four players. An overly keen DFB employee placed World Cup bags in front of the doors at the Kaiserau sports school. Four players did not receive any and therefore found out they'd been removed. These players were Guido Buchwald, Wolfgang Funkel, Heinz Gründel, and Frank Mill.
Let's hope Julian Nagelsmann doesn't have to drop a player. I certainly don't want Daniela Katzenberger announcing the name.
