One Million Dollar Casino Heist in Las Vegas Results in One-Year Imprisonment for Perpetrator
A 24-year-old man who stole over $1 million from the Circa Hotel & Casino was sentenced to a year in jail on Monday. Erik Gutierrez Martinez admitted to stealing over $100,000 and could face an additional 36-to-96-month sentence if he doesn't complete his current sentence.
Prosecutors claim Gutierrez Martinez played a crucial role in a highly sophisticated criminal ring. Clark County Deputy District Attorney Austin Beaumont called him "a bag man" for the organization.
Judge Jasmin Lilly-Spells said if Gutierrez Martinez serves his sentence in the Clark County Detention Center, he might be able to cut down the time he'd spend in a state prison.
Before sentencing, Martinez admitted he made a "very stupid" decision. In court, he stated, "This isn't what I want to do or what I ever wanted to do."
Caught in the Act
On June 21, officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) discovered $850,000 in cash at Martinez's home. The money was stored in a large bag labeled "Circa," indicating its association with the hotel and casino.
Part of a scam involving the Circa Hotel & Casino, Eureka Casino Resort in Mesquite, Nevada, and the Golden Nugget in Laughlin, Nevada, the stolen cash amounted to more than $1 million.
