Football Head Coach - Oliver Ruhnert now belongs to Sahra Wagenknecht's alliance.
After taking up the role of chief scout at German soccer team 1. FC Union Berlin, Oliver Ruhnert is also switching his political stance. The former SPD and Left Party politician now belongs to the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), as confirmed by a party spokesperson to the German Press Agency on a Saturday. The "Spiegel" and "Iserlohner Kreisanzeiger und Zeitung" had previously released this information.
"Since being involved in politics for a while now, I believe it's essential to take on the challenges of our society. Being open to new ideas and focusing on peace, social justice, and challenging outdated thinking," Ruhnert shared with the German Press Agency. "I find BSW reflects these values perfectly. Therefore, I felt drawn to stand by this agenda from the start." Ruhnert intends to assume the role of parliamentary group leader for the Iserlohn city council. In his previous role, he held this position for the Left Party in Iserlohn.
For some time, rumors circulated about possible changes in Ruhnert's professional life. "With Oliver Ruhnert, we've gained a key player," Wagenknecht stated to "Spiegel". "He knows what it takes to make it to the Bundesliga, how to stand his ground there, and how to face off against formidable opponents. Joining BSW could be massively advantageous for us." Wagenknecht parted ways with the Left Party in October 2023 and received a lot of attention by founding the BSW coalition in her name.
Ruhnert will be returning to his previous post as chief scout at Union, where he had been in charge since 2018. The season before, Union managed to avoid relegation due to a final matchday victory. His replacement at the team would be Horst Heldt.
