Ohio Father Accused of Leaving Infant Alone at Casino for Almost Three Hours to Face Court
A 27-year-old man from Elyria, Ohio named Kyle Miller is set to appear in court later this month for reportedly abandoning his 10-month-old baby alone in his car while he went to gamble at the Jack Cleveland Casino. Miller is currently facing child endangerment charges. Initially, he also faced a tampering with evidence charge, but this was dropped by prosecutors upon reviewing the evidence.
The disturbing incident occurred on April 27 and was recently reported by Ohio's WKYC TV station. Surveillance footage captured the infant left unattended in a car parked on the fourth floor of the casino's garage. A nearby motorist observed the baby and immediately called 911 for assistance before remaining in the garage with other witnesses until police arrived. When officers entered the vehicle, they discovered blankets had been taped to the backseat windows to block out the sun.
A witness commented on the child's appearance, "Oh my God. Look how beautiful she is," a recording of the incident revealed.
Upon examining the infant, an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) crew determined her tired demeanor. One EMS member told the baby, "You look tired. You don't know who I am, and you don't care who I am – except for being held," adding she was then transferred to other relatives. Cleveland police located and questioned Miller, who was still at the casino at 10:54 p.m. He was arrested on the spot, having left his baby unaccompanied for two hours and 44 minutes.
Miller was wearing a t-shirt when found, accompanied by a friend inside the casino. "Put your hands behind your back," the officers instructed Miller and his companion upon their discovery, adding, "Who's the father of the baby?" The officers handcuffed Miller, who was then taken into custody.
Upon being detained, the officers confronted Miller, "You're under arrest right now for child endangerment. What were you thinking leaving a baby in a car while you go to the casino?" Miller appeared before Cleveland Municipal Court, where he pleaded not guilty. He posted a $15,000 bond and was released from custody. His next court date is scheduled for June 17.
This pastime has resulted in similar incidents across the country, where adults have left their young children alone in their vehicles to gamble. Convictions could lead to imprisonment. Authorities implore visitors to casinos to ensure that minors are adequately supervised to avoid potential injuries in unattended vehicles.
