It's preferable to be a spectator rather than a goalkeeper. - Odd Exit of Pavlenka from Werder
Now, his successful period in Bremen has come to an end. However, it ended on a sour note.
The Czech player seems to be displeased. After being demoted to second place behind Michael Zetterer (28), Pavlenka did not receive a new contract offer from Werder. And he's leaving Bremen with hurt pride.
In the last test of the season (9:4 against Bremen league Blumenthal), he decided to sit on the bench instead of making a final appearance in the Werder jersey.
Coach Ole Werner: "Pavlas said he didn't need this farewell. He was happy to be there, but he didn't have to stand on the field anymore."
Pavlenka's unexpected departure: Pavlenka as a spectator instead of a goalkeeper!
"I'm glad that my future lies at Werder Bremen," said "Pavlas" after his last contract extension in May 2022. No one knew that this future would only last two years. Especially not himself...
In contrast to Pavlenka, his rival Zetterer has made significant strides in recent years. The new number 1 was always the better footballer, but has now significantly improved in goalkeeping.
Pavlenka hasn't progressed in the past few years. His insecurities in the passing game and game build-up used to make Werder fans cringe. In addition, the introverted Czech also had a relatively low standing in the team hierarchy. Even after seven years on the Weser, his name was missing from the team leadership.
He left Bremen quietly and without any fanfare. He didn't grant any interviews, not even to the club media.
Now Pavlenka has left Bremen. It's still unknown which team will keep his goal clean in the future. There's supposed to be interest from Saudi Arabia.
