Ocean Casino Resort valet employees join Teamsters union
About 52 valet parking employees at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City recently agreed to be represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Union Representative stated that the vote was “overwhelmingly” in favor of cooperating with prominent trade union organizations.
Teamsters Local 331 leaders will begin negotiating contracts for the new members and praised workers for the move.
I... applaud their decision to organize with Teamsters and fight for what they deserve," Local 331 President Marcus King said in a statement released this week." This is a fantastic organizational win and we look forward to helping the team secure an excellent first contract that reflects their hard work,” he added.
Union priorities include raising wages, improving benefits, job security and decent working conditions.
Regina Ceballos, who works as a cashier at Ocean Casino Resort, said she and her colleagues organized to gain more respect from their bosses and managers.
"Management feels they can handle things without our involvement," Ceballos said in the statement. "We want to take back some power and have a voice. We still have a lot of work to do, but we're excited and ready to pursue a strong first contract."
Big Victory
Tommy Blitsch, director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Shows and Casinos division, further stated that Ocean Casino’s valet employees are “tired of the status quo and ready to fight for the benefits and protections provided by the Teamsters contract.”
We are looking forward to our first orders. It's a major victory and will serve as a stepping stone for other non-union casino workers in Atlantic City. "
Teamsters Local 331 represents workers in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Gloucester counties in New Jersey.
Currently, more than 5,000 casino employees nationwide are Teamsters union members.
Current Unite Here offers
In July 2022, employees at five Atlantic City gaming establishments voted to approve a four-year labor contract that provides job improvements for union members.
The Unite Here union's Local 54 represents 6,000 workers in negotiations with the Borgata, Caesar's, Hard Rock, Harrah's and Tropicana casinos. The agreement also led to similar agreements with an additional 3,000 employees at Bally’s and Ocean Casino Resort.
In addition to raises, Unite Here members receive fully funded health care, enhanced retirement plans, job protections and fairer workloads.
