Oakland: Unlawful Gaming Ring Busted, Guns Confiscated, Three Detained

A clandestine gambling establishment was shuttered in Oakland, California following a court-issued search. Law enforcement officers rounded up three suspects and uncovered numerous firearms in the course of the operation on 77 Avenue this week.

A handgun, a rifle, and a shotgun were among the weapons found by the authorities, as outlined in Bay City News. Additionally, several gambling machines were seized.

The detained individuals were apprehended on the basis of unspecified arrest warrants. Reports also indicate that law enforcement discovered evidence connected to a local homicide. No specific information was made available regarding this murder.

Officers from the Oakland Police Department (OPD), the US Marshals Service Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the San Ramon Police Department, participated in the investigation.

The OPD Criminal Investigation Division is currently working to analyze the evidence gathered during the raid of the illicit casino.

Oakland authorities assert that they will continue their efforts to dismantle illegal gambling establishments. Landlords could face fines if their properties are found to host such operations.

Previous Oakland Raids

In July, police arrested four individuals at an underground gambling den in Oakland. The suspects were charged with illegal firearm possession or illegal firearm activity following the search on East 16th Street, close to the Fruitvale neighborhood. All the suspects reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, and their identities were not immediately revealed.

During the raid, officers confiscated three weapons, multiple magazines, concealed amounts of cash, journals, and slot machines. One of the firearms was an assault-style rifle, CBS News reported. Several extended magazines were also taken into possession.

The court-ordered search constituted the third raid at the same location within a year, according to Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo, D-5. Gallo also revealed that there were five illegal gambling dens operating within one mile of each other, with some transforming from businesses to gambling sites at night.

Gallo expressed the difficulty in motivating locals to report wrongdoing. He mentioned that more than a dozen clandestine gambling operations have been identified by police in Oakland since 2020, with at least three of these establishments having been raided.
