North Carolina sportsbooks to stop offering until Jan. 8
When North Carolina lawmakers legalized sports betting earlier this year, they created the law that would allow bets to be placed in time for the college football national championship game on Jan. 8, 2024. But the regulator said on Tuesday the new scheme would not come online by then.
It's unclear when legal betting will be available in the Tar Heel State. But that may not come until June 15th.
The North Carolina Lottery Commission is tasked with developing new rules for sports betting. Regulators told the council's sports betting committee on Tuesday they would not be able to meet the January 8 launch date, according to media reports.
Sterl Carpenter, executive director of the North Carolina Gaming Compliance Agency, told the committee that there are still many steps to be taken before North Carolinians can place a bet, according to local news outlet WRAL.
January 8th is a first date but maybe not a day where betting is allowed? ” Commissioner Ripley Rand asked Carpenter during the meeting.
"Absolutely," Carpenter replied.
Commissioner Cary Boyce said the commission must meet daily to provide online sports betting once required by law. "Thank you for clarifying that not everything can be done by January 8," she told the meeting, WRAL reported.
A spokesman for the Lottery Commission confirmed the accuracy of the comments when contacted.
Regulations pending
The Commission will take several steps this week to bring sports betting closer to reality. The commission is scheduled to meet Thursday to adopt its first sports betting rules and a sports betting directory that was approved by the commission on Tuesday.
Draft Sports Betting Directory covers dozens of professional, collegiate and international games in 45 different events.
North Carolina has also launched a new website, ncgaming.gov, to provide the latest information on the rulemaking and licensing process.
Additional steps required
There are a few more steps you need to take before you start betting on sports.
Regulators must approve additional rules after a formal comment process to consider public comments. They will then proceed with the application and licensing process, including background checks on key applicants and employees.
Once a license is granted, the regulator will be responsible for overseeing the sports betting program to address key priorities such as internal controls and responsible gambling. Sports betting operators must enter into a naming agreement with the sports team or governing body and may only operate within that team's facility.
North Carolina's sports betting laws allow for live sports betting at four professional stadiums - U.S. Bank Stadium (home of the NFL's Carolina Panthers), Spectrum Center (home of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets) ), PNC Arena (home of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets), the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes and WakeMed Park, home of the NWSL's North Carolina Courage.
Events at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR races per year, and Sedgefield Country Club and Quail Hollow Club, which host two PGA Tour events per year, can also open temporary sports betting. .
"Until rulemaking and licensing are complete, a launch date for sports betting cannot be determined. Sports betting is not expected to begin until January 8, 2024, the earliest date allowed by law," Van Denton, director of public relations for the North Carolina Lottery, said in a statement said in a statement on Tuesday. “The Committee remains committed to ensuring that sports betting is introduced in an effective and appropriate manner as soon as possible and is currently working towards achieving this by the June 15 deadline set out in the Bill.”
