North Carolina sports betting won't be available in time for Super Bowl
Sports bettors in North Carolina will be unable to place legal bets in time for the Super Bowl, the state's top lottery regulator said Wednesday.
The North Carolina Lottery Commission is giving sports bettors until Dec. 27 to submit applications. However, authorities have not yet set a date for betting to begin.
We know people are excited. "I know I've been asked many times ... whether sports betting will launch in time for the Super Bowl," Lottery Commission Chairman Ripley Land said during a public meeting Wednesday."While the Commission is committed to making sports betting available in an efficient manner as soon as possible, unfortunately this is not the case as all work remains to be completed."
The applications require a review period of 60 to 90 days to allow regulators to conduct background checks on key businesses and employees, meaning betting won't go live until the end of February at the earliest.
New Appointment
North Carolina legalized sports betting last year, and the new law directs the commission to establish a sports betting program starting on Jan. 8, 2024, the date of the college football national championship game.
Regulators previously admitted they would not be able to achieve this goal, and Rand's recent comments further pushed the release date beyond February 11. The law gives regulators until June 15 at the latest to offer online sports betting.
Rand said a go-live date will be announced once the application is submitted and the proposed rules take effect.
Application process begins
At its meeting Wednesday, the Lottery Commission unanimously approved the application process for sports bettors interested in settling in the Tar Heel State. The state requires potential sports bettors to compile thousands of pages of documentation to support their applications and demonstrate compliance with state law.
Sports betting is highly regulated, and North Carolina, like other states, has high expectations and strict requirements for licensees,” Rand said.
Rand said that by the end of this week or early next week, the state's sports betting website, ncgaming.gov, will add an application portal.
Sportsbooks must also reach agreements with professional sports teams and major venues in North Carolina before submitting applications to the state. A permanent sportsbook could be opened there.
North Carolina sports betting laws allow for live sports betting at four professional stadiums: U.S. Bank Stadium (home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers), Spectrum Center (home of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets), PNC Stadium (the NHL’s Hurricanes (home of the Carolina Panthers), and WakeMed Park, home of the NWSL North Carolina Courage.
Events at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR races per year, and Sedgefield Country Club and Quail Hollow Club, which host two PGA Tour events per year, can also open temporary sports betting. .
Next step
Reid said the regulator was acting as quickly as possible and hoped to announce a launch date as soon as the application was submitted.
Until then, the committee has a lot of work to do.
“When we know how many license applicants we have, when we complete the initial sports betting rulemaking process, when we complete background checks on applicants and their key personnel, and when we issue preliminary approval, we will Set that date." License vendors and ensure license operators have robust and compliant internal controls in place and that their critical equipment and software are certified by independent testing laboratories. " Rand said.
