Nine Las Vegas Hotels Now Have Bed Bugs, According to One Report

The pesky bed bugs problem in Vegas is reaching alarming levels as two more resorts on the Strip have been hit by these unwanted intruders. With thousands of visitors expected for the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix and the Super Bowl, these developments couldn't have come at a worse time for the hotel owners.

A shocking report by KLAS-TV/Las Vegas* has shed light on this issue, showing that bed bugs have been discovered in two more Strip resort hotels this summer. This brings the total number of hotels with bed bug infestations to nine. The affected properties include Circus Circus, Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, The Palazzo, Tropicana, MGM Grand, Sahara, The Venetian, and now Park MGM.

The Venetian reportedly had a guest who spotted the bloodsuckers on July 29 and was relocated to a different room. A health department inspection a few days later verified the presence of the pests. Similarly, Park MGM had a guest who reported bed bugs on August 14, and another inspection the next day confirmed the finding.

Neither hotel responded to multiple requests for comments from KLAS on the issue.

The First Resorts' Responses

When we reached out to the first seven resorts that discovered bed bugs, two of them responded.

The Tropicana revealed that they conduct "comprehensive preventative maintenance programs" and prioritize the health and safety of their guests. "In the event of a complaint, we immediately isolate the affected room and its surrounding areas," Tropicana VP/GM Arik Knowles said in an official statement. "At that point, a third-party service evaluates the situation and provides a recommendation on appropriate next steps, including professional treatment, should anything be found."

Another resort, Sahara, also shared a statement with KLAS, saying: "While extremely unlikely, our immediate response protocol ensures any issue is successfully resolved."

MGM Resorts also commented on the issue, asserting that they have "comprehensive procedures in place to address and resolve any issue that may arise."

Finding Bed Bugs Before They Find You

To stay safe while checking into a hotel, keep your luggage zipped up and undisturbed inside the bathtub when you first enter the room. Then, before you unpack, conduct a thorough check of the bed, looking for the bugs or their droppings. Experts advise searching for bed bugs, blood stains, and black dots on the bed.

Bed bugs are small, flat insects (0.04 to 0.2 inches long) that are usually reddish-brown in color. These creatures exclusively feed on the blood of humans and animals during their sleep.

In case you come across any signs of a bed bug infestation, the Southern Nevada Health Department advises informing the front desk immediately.

It's important to note that the cleanliness of a hotel room has no bearing on the presence of bed bugs. The threat might be more closely linked to visitors from regions where these critters are more prevalent.
