Officers at the border. - Night of Walpurgis in the Harz Mountains, featuring attire and real music performances
Folks in the Harz Mountains made merry on Walpurgis Night with music and costumes aplenty. Many attired themselves as witches or demons early in the evening of Tuesday, with a dpa photographer witnessing the trend in Braunlage, Lower Saxony. A tractor parade with festive tractors showcased the event, with children prancing on broomstick trailers and witches and devils grooving down the streets. A fireworks display was also part of the action.
The Halberstadt police attested to a serene celebration of Walpurgis Night in Saxony-Anhalt, while a spokesperson from the Goslar police echoed similar sentiments. However, police couldn't provide initial details on the number of participants.
In lower Saxony's Harz Mountains, the towns of Braunlage, St. Andreasberg, Bad Grund, and Hahnenklee mark the strongholds for Walpurgis Night activities. Various events are programmed in Saxony-Anhalt as well, such as in Schierke.
A Legend Stemming from Goethe
The origins of Walpurgis Night are attributed to St. Walburga. Goethe introduced the insane bash in his literary work "Faust" after his journey up the Brocken in 1777. Apparently, butterflies were present, making it an autumnal occasion. In the past, folk tales suggested that witches gather on the Brocken, or Blocksberg, on May 1st to engage in wild revelry with the devil. Additionally, winter departed with a ruckus, and spring was welcomed. Nowadays, Walpurgis Night is a significant draw for tourists in the Harz Mountains.
