Newspaper reports state that popular American rapper Nicki Minaj got detained at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport for carrying soft drugs. On Saturday, she posted pictures on the web showing her being questioned by police officers. The authorities confirmed with AFP news that a 41-year-old American lady was taken into custody. However, they refrained from divulging her identity.
Robert Kapel, the spokesperson for the military police, told AFP that they had detained a 41-year-old woman suspected of attempting to transport soft drugs to another nation. He clarified that questioning was still ongoing.
Nicki Minaj blames authorities for planning negative stories
After being released, Kapel said that the subject had paid a "reasonable" fine and that there was no reason for her to stay in custody. "We now have all the information required for our file. Case closed," he said.
Minaj claimed on the platform X that the authorities found cannabis in her carry-on luggage. She alleged that the cannabis belonged to one of her security people.
The famous singer was traveling to a show in Manchester, England, on Saturday evening, as part of her ongoing world tour. On X, Minaj wrote that she had to go to a police station to give her statement. She accused the authorities of premeditatedly making her late "to write unfavorable articles about me".
Cannabis possession isn't always legal in the Netherlands
There's a persistent misconception outside the Netherlands that all drugs are legal there. The well-known coffee shops where weed is sold are a popular attraction for stoners.
Though the use of small amounts of cannabis is technically illegal in the Netherlands, law enforcement doesn't enforce it under a 'tolerance' policy in place since the 70's. Transporting the drugs to another country, though, is forbidden.
Minaj's explicit lyrics and distinct vocal style contributed to her fame in 2010. Rocked by her provocative clothing with neon outfits and wigs, Minaj is considered one of the most influential female rap artists globally. She released hits like "Starships", "Bang Bang", and "Anaconda".
