NHL player faces a lawsuit over gambling debts.
The famous Cosmopolitan Casino in Las Vegas has initiated a civil court case against the NHL star Evander Kane at Clark County District Court. The lawsuit claims that Kane, a Canadian left winger for the San Jose Sharks, has not paid a massive gambling debt of approximately half a million US dollars. The lawsuit alleges that the 28-year-old ice hockey player took out eight loans of varying amounts between $20,000 and $100,000 during April, gambled them away, and never repaid them.
Kane was in Las Vegas for a playoff game against the Las Vegas Golden Knights when these events transpired. The casino has requested immediate repayment of Kane’s gambling debts along with legal fees and other costs amounting to $15,000. The professional ice hockey player signed a seven-year contract with the Sharks worth a hefty $49 million, meaning he can certainly afford to clear the debt. As of now, the casino and the player have both remained silent on the matter.
Evander Kane is no stranger to legal disputes; his off-court personality is bourne out as controversial and outspoken. In 2016, he found himself in a heated legal issue during a bar visit in Buffalo, New York. He was charged with disorderly conduct and was accused of assaulting three women. The charges against him were eventually dropped, with the prosecutor describing Kane as "arrogant and rude."
Throughout his career, Kane has been embroiled in more than one case for excessive partying. In 2012, there were rumours flying around that he did not pay his share of the bills. During a match against Ottawa, a fan held up a sign that read: "Dear Evander, please stop busting your bills. Sincerely, the waiters and restaurant owners of Winnipeg." Kane dismissed these allegations, calling them lies. The NHL and local media subsequently investigated and could not find any grounds for any misconduct from the player. But he was advised to limit his Twitter activities.
This lawsuit is not the first legal spat between a US casino and an NHL player in a short timeframe. In October, the casino group Mohegan Sun filed a lawsuit against Eugene Melnyk, the owner of the Ottawa Senators. This case also revolved around gambling debts. The casino asserts that Melnyk, a Canadian billionaire, accumulated a debt of over $900,000 in gambling without bothering to repay the amount.
Mohegan is demanding payment of $915,000, in addition to $15,000 as compensation for damages, costs and interest. Melnyk's lawyers, however, claim that the casino utilized unscrupulous practices, such as not allowing the owner to cash in his chips during a successful gambling spree, resulting in Kane's accumulated losses.
The events from St. Patrick’s Day weekend in 2017 form the basis for this lawsuit. No settlement has been agreed upon so far. The tension between the parties seems to have deepened, and they are likely to face a protracted legal battle.
Eugene Melnyk, one of the controversial figures, aside from being a wealthy businessman, is also the creator of the drug company Biovail Corp. His net worth, as per Forbes, stood at $1.21 billion in 2017, making him one of Canada's 100 richest people. In 2008, Melnyk was implicated in an accounting fraud case and accused of misleading investors. The SEC, consequently, banned him from serving as a manager at any publicly-traded Canadian firm for a period of five years.
