Following Nascar's move, another leading US sports league, the National Hockey League (NHL), has joined the American Gaming Association's (AGA) new responsible sports betting code. This decision comes after the increasing popularity of sports betting, with many clubs and associations partnering up with bookmakers.

As a part of this agreement, the NHL will leverage its arenas, digital marketing channels, and franchise partners to promote various educational initiatives. Consumers will be provided with information on how to safely place sports bets and how legal operators can help prevent financial loss. NHL's Potential Gains from the Sports Betting Boom

The initial motivation behind the AGA initiative stems from the rising popularity of sports betting among the general public. Since the resumption of top-tier sports, the betting market has skyrocketed, with a record $2.1 billion in stakes reported for August - marking the highest monthly betting volume in US history. This represents a 90% improvement on the previous year.

The top sports leagues and clubs desire to capitalize on this surge in popularity and are collaborating with bookmakers. The AGA revealed that the NHL has signed numerous marketing and data partnerships with betting providers since the ban on sports betting was lifted in May 2018. Some of these partnerships include those with PointsBet, Rivers Casinos in Pittsburgh, and IMG Arena.

According to the AGA's research and surveys, legalized sports betting is resulting in a $216 million increase in annual revenue for the NHL. NHL betting is highly popular among enthusiasts, as illustrated by the fact that 27% of bettors claimed to have wagered on NHL games last year. Of this group, 19% had placed their bets at land-based casinos, 41% opted for online platforms, and only 22% visited betting shops.

Currently, 18 states plus Washington D.C. offer regulated sports betting, with four more states gearing up to pass legislation. Six other states are also planning legalization. Over half of all regulated states house at least one NHL team, according to the AGA.

Bill Miller, the AGA's CEO, mentioned that more sports leagues and teams are embracing sports betting partnerships, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. With the emergence of new avenues for fan engagement, it is essential to guide fans on how they can participate in sports betting responsibly. This serves the interests of both the AGA and the bookmakers, making the NHL's role a vital one for the future of the US-wide sports betting reform.

Nascar as the First Top Sports League to Sign Up

The NHL is the second top American sports league to adopt the new AGA betting code after Nascar. In September, Nascar also agreed to the regulations and will actively promote the "Have A Game Plan" initiative. It will run campaigns through social media and even on the radio.

The collaboration between the racing series and BetMGM, a joint venture between MGM Resorts and GVC, is facilitated by Nascar's agreement. The company plans to launch a comprehensive Nascar betting platform in 2021. Coordinating with Genius Sports, a sports data service provider, the organization is poised to monitor real-time data. It remains to be seen if other major sports leagues will also follow the NHL and Nascar's lead in joining the AGA initiative.
