NFL warns players about events in Las Vegas during Super Bowl LXXVIII
The NFL is hosting its biggest game of the year in Las Vegas for the first time. For decades, the casino and sports betting town was shunned by the professional football league until everything changed in May 2018.
It’s been nearly six years since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law that restricted single-game sports betting in Nevada. Since then, more than 30 states have legalized sports betting, and Las Vegas has become a major sports city.
As a result, the NFL introduced sports betting as the oddsmakers were believed to significantly increase fan engagement, thereby boosting broadcast and streaming ratings. The NFL's changing attitude will come to a head with next month's Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, just west of the Las Vegas Strip.
WARNING TO NFL PLAYERS
With casino gambling and sports betting rampant in Las Vegas, the NFL is taking steps to keep players safe and protect the integrity of the big game.
A statement from the league to players and the NFL Players Association said players can visit casinos and gamble in cities with teams not participating in the Super Bowl, but not during sporting events. Players on both teams participating in the big game are banned from all gambling activities, including slot machines and table games.
"While in Las Vegas, players participating in the Super Bowl may not engage in any form of gambling, including casino games and sports betting," the NFL's letter said, according to Front Office Sports.
This policy applies to all team members involved in Super Bowl 58.
As reported last June, NFL Gambling Policy prohibits all players, coaches, executives and other team personnel from placing bets on NFL games. There are no exceptions, including where a player bets on a match in which he did not participate or did not take part.
Covered individuals are also prohibited from placing bets on any other sporting event at NFL or team facilities or in the course of their professional activities (such as while traveling). However, outside of their teams and during the offseason, these individuals may bet on non-NFL sports.
Super Bowl Record
With the Super Bowl being held in Nevada for the first time, oddsmakers believe the big game could bring record-breaking bets. Nevada's record for Super Bowl wins was set during Super Bowl LII in 2022, when the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-30, bringing in nearly $180 million on the books.
Bookmakers are looking for a matchup between the Ravens and either the Lions or the 49ers, as oddsmakers say there is some betting fatigue on the Chiefs. Kansas City has been to three of the last four Super Bowls and won two of the big games.
