News Update: Robbery at Cal Neva Sportsbook in Reno

A casino in Reno, Nevada was held up by an armed robber on Sunday morning. The suspect is still at large.

The thief entered the William Hill sportsbook at the Cal Neva casino and brandished a gun at a staff member, demanding money. He then made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The culprit wore a mask during the heist. He was last spotted running from the 2nd Street casino towards 1st Street, as reported by Nevada TV station KOLO.

The police department in Reno was notified of the robbery at around 9:20 am on Sunday.

Secret Witness, a crime tip organization in Northern Nevada, has offered a $1,500 reward for any information that results in the arrest and prosecution of the suspect.

Last month, there was a similar incident at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno when someone stole an undetermined amount of money from a Slot Key employee on April 1. Secret Witness has offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of that suspect. It's unclear if they've been apprehended yet.

Police in Detroit arrested a man on Monday for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from another person in the parking garage at Motor City Casino. The victim, a man believed to be from Detroit, had been gambling Sunday night and won a substantial amount. He was on his way out when he was robbed on Monday morning. The victim was not injured, and it's not clear if the suspect had a weapon.

In New York, two men were arrested on July 19 for running an illegal gambling operation. The New York City Police Department raided the former bakery, which had been operating as a gaming center. One of the suspects, Victor Tomescu, aged 69, was allegedly the owner of the operation and was also selling alcohol without a license. Police also found six illegal gambling machines and several card tables at the premises.

Tomescu was charged with grand larceny, illegal gambling, unlicensed sale and storage of alcohol, promoting gambling, and criminal nuisance. The other arrestee, Ion Ghereben, aged 59, was charged with possession of a gambling device. He is said to have worked at the gambling establishment.

The former bakery, known as Pieklo Bakery, closed in September 2022 after 44 years in business, according to its Facebook page.
