New York Yankees place pitcher Carlos Rodon on injured list
With the season quickly approaching, the New York Yankees sent starter Carlos Rodon to Illinois with a hamstring injury.
Manager Aaron Boone removed Rodon in the third inning of Sunday's game against the Houston Astros after his starting pitcher showed discomfort after throwing a few pitches.
"I feel like it's taken hold," Rodon told reporters after the loss."It felt like a cramp and then it happened again." It felt better afterward, so this is more of a preventative measure. "
Rodon underwent an MRI on Monday, which revealed a strained left hamstring. The Yankees sent him to Illinois for 15 days.
"It's an inferior breed," Boone confirmed.
Rookie right-hander Jonny Brito will likely replace Rodon in the starting lineup until he returns. Brito made 14 appearances and started 12 games. He is 4-5 on the season with a 5.02 ERA and a 1.34 KPS.
Rodon has been struggling since his debut in July
The left-handed Rodon was one of the top free-agent starters on the market during the offseason. The Yankees signed Rodon to a six-year, $162 million contract, believing he could be the No. 2 or No. 3 player in the rotation behind star player Gerrit Cole.
Rodon injured his left forearm during spring training, causing the Yankees to sideline him as a precaution. His recovery suffered a setback in April when chronic back pain flared up. In early May, Rowden received a cortisone injection, but the pain continued. He missed three months of the regular season before making his debut.
It wasn't until July that Rodon started in pinstripes for the first time. Considering he's making $22.8 million this year, his season is nothing short of disappointing. Rodon went 1-4 with a 7.33 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in six starts. The Yankees were 1-5 when Rodon hit the plate.
"I was very frustrated," Roden said."This is not the way I wanted to come out here and perform. I'm very frustrated with my performance."
Rodon has hit eight home runs in 27 innings this season. Last season, Rodon pitched 178 innings and allowed just 12 homers.
Time is running out for the Yankees
The Yankees' pitchers were seriously injured in spring training, and the bad luck continued throughout the season. As a direct result, the Yankees finished last in the American League East.
Rodon's latest injury occurred less than a week after starting pitcher Domingo German left the Yankees to enter an alcohol treatment facility.
Right-hander Luis Severino also remains questionable. He is 2-6 on the season with a 7.74 ERA and 1.85 KPS. The Yankees are 3-8 in their last 11 starts.
Right-handed prospect Randy Vasquez could be called up for exhibition games to replace Severino in the rotation. In three starts this season, Vasquez is 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 1.04 FPS.
The shorthanded Yankees are getting much-needed help for their stretch schedule. Skilled left-handed starter Nestor Cortez is finally back with the Yankees after missing two months with a left shoulder injury.
The Yankees have restored right-hander Jonathan "Johnny Lasagna" Loaisiga from 60 days out of Illinois. Loaisiga has been sidelined since early April after undergoing surgery for a bone spur.
The Yankees (58-55) are 5 1/2 games away from the AL Wild Card with 49 games remaining. Two other teams, the Seattle Mariners (60-52) and Boston Red Sox (58-54), are ahead of them in the bubble.
According to FanGraphs's postseason projections, the Yankees have a 14% chance of earning a playoff berth. Your chance of winning the World Series is less than 1%.
The Yankees' World Series odds have dropped to +6,000, and they now have a +3,500 chance of winning the AL pennant.
According to one popular bet from DraftKings, the Yankees have a +550 chance of making the playoffs. The Bronx Bombers are on the verge of bankruptcy and are now -750 favorites to miss the playoffs.
