Nevada Supreme Court rules against Nathan in horse chasing case

Former cult leader Nathan Chasing Horse failed to have his charges dismissed in Nevada Supreme Court, according to a ruling released this week.

Attorneys are trying to get the state Supreme Court to dismiss pending charges alleging inappropriate sexual relations and related crimes.

Two of the three judges said they did not believe they had jurisdiction over the case. They decided not to make a decision on the matter.

We do not believe [the applicant] has determined that sustaining the complaint is necessary," Judges Patricia Lee and Ron D. Paraguire said in a two-page ruling.

However, Judge Douglas Herndon disagreed and wanted a review on the merits.

Lawyers for the horse-chasing companies argued that the lawsuit against their clients should be dismissed. They claimed the Eighth Circuit erred.

The legal team claims the sex was consensual, evidence was collected improperly and grand jury members were not properly instructed before returning the indictment.

The case has now been sent back to a lower court in Nevada for sentencing. As of Friday, he remained in custody at the Clark County Detention Center.Bail was set at $300,000.

Count ahead 18

Chasing Horse, 47, faces a total of 18 felony charges in Nevada. He was charged with six counts of sexual assault, 10 counts of sexual assault of a minor, kidnapping of a minor and indecent assault. The charges stem from incidents that occurred between 2014 and 2020.

There are also indictments or pending indictments against him in federal court in Nevada and in courts in Montana and Canada. They involve alleged exploitation of female victims, sex with minors, pornography and other charges.

The victims were Indigenous women and teenagers, according to authorities.

One of Chai Ma's victims claimed that Chai Ma promised he would cure her mother, who was suffering from cancer. He allegedly began attacking her when she was 14 years old.

CRAZY FOLLOWS

Chase Horse is considered a tribal healer by many people in the sect known as the Circle.

On January 31, authorities searched the North Las Vegas, Nevada, home where Chasing Horse lived with multiple women, police said. He was arrested and tried.

Chasing Horse played the role of "Smile a Lot" in the 1990 Kevin Costner film Dances with Wolves.

An online petition seeks to send him to jail and demands that authorities never grant him bail. As of Friday, 1,602 people had added their names to the Change.org petition.

"Lakota leader Nathan Chase got there through abuse and manipulation. He should be incarcerated for the crimes he committed because his intentions were violent and he continues to threaten the community," the petition states. "
