Nevada Online Sportsbook Operators See Circa Climbing Ranks
Circa Sports is a relatively young contender in Nevada's online sports betting market, but it's also one of the quickest growing. In the four years since its debut, Circa Sports, Nevada's version of the Circa Sports mobile app, has a market share in the state of approximately 11%, according to research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming (EKG). That puts the operator in a rivalry with Red Rock Resorts' STN Sports app for the third spot in Silver State.
Circa Sports has developed a niche strategy, taking a high limit, low-hold approach compared to other operators' feature-rich, single game parlay (SGP)-heavy methods. EKG describes this as "a different game" being played by Circa.
Known as "a bettor's book," Circa stands out because it doesn't shy away from sharp bettors. Other competitors on the US sports betting scene focus on appeasing casual bettors with long-odds offerings like SGPs and position themselves as purely entertainment.
Circa's Growth in Nevada Remarkable
Sports betting is legal and regulated in 34 states and DC. However, not all of them offer online betting. Nevada, being one of the ones that do, has a unique process for account creation. To sign up for an online sports betting account in Nevada, bettors must visit a physical casino to fill out paperwork. This makes Circa's success in its home state even more noteworthy given it has fewer physical sportsbooks compared to rivals BetMGM and Caesars Entertainment's William Hill brand.
In Nevada, Circa sportsbooks are located at its namesake property and at the D and Golden Gate casinos, both in downtown Las Vegas, as well as at the Tuscany Suites & Casino and the Pass Casino in Henderson. Last year, Circa entered Northern Nevada through a partnership with the Legends Bay Casino in Sparks.
Meanwhile, BetMGM's parent MGM Resorts International is the largest casino operator on the Las Vegas Strip, while Caesars Entertainment operates 15 gaming establishments across the state, which is why they control about 68.5% of Nevada's online sports betting market, according to EKG estimates.
Circa's Edges
Along with its reputation for accommodating sharp bettors, Circa has other factors working in its favor. For example, its yearly NFL contests, Circa Million and Circa Survivor, draw thousands of participants. To take part, participants must visit a Circa sportsbook to sign up.
For many, the process of registering at a Circa sportsbooks is part of the appeal due to it being the home of the world's largest sportsbook and its Stadium Swim has become a popular pool scene at any Las Vegas casino.
Circa's ability to gradually increase its market share in its home state is crucial for another reason. It's almost certain that DraftKings and FanDuel will eventually enter the Nevada market and potentially disrupt established competitors. But Circa could maintain and even thrive in this situation because it operates on a different model than these brands.
