Nevada Highway Patrol Officers' Fatalities Result in Plea Agreement

The culprit responsible for the deaths of two Nevada state troopers on the Interstate 15 in Las Vegas last November admitted guilt in court on Tuesday.

Jemarcus Williams, aged 46, confessed to two charges of driving under the influence, causing death, in front of Judge Susan Johnson at Clark County District Court.

When he's setenced on June 11th, he will potentially be sentenced to a prison term of two to twenty years for each count, as per the plea bargain. In addition to this, he'll also have to pay $5,000 to the families of the deceased. His driving permit will be invalidated and if he gets it back, he'll be required to install a breathalyzer device in his car for a period of one to three years.

Following the accident, Williams managed to escape the scene. Nonetheless, his car, abandoned at a Las Vegas apartment complex on J Street and Monroe Avenue, was discovered by police. They captured Williams in the vicinity.

Initial Charges

Previously, Williams was charged with two counts of reckless driving resulting in death, driving under the influence resulting in death, and duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death. The indictments were amended as a consequence of the plea deal.

Sessions at Palms Casino

The revelation that Williams had been drinking at the Palms Casino in the hours prior to the crash emerged. Security personnel at the casino discouraged him from driving, warning that they would summon local police if he operated his vehicle while intoxicated.

He opted to hide behind a tree on the casino premises instead. When the guards left the location, Williams proceeded to get into his car and drive off.

The collision resulted in the deaths of Nevada State Police Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix on November 30, 2023.

One trooper passed away at the site of the wreck, while the other succumbed at University Medical Center.

Both officers had been responding to a motorist dozing in his car when they were struck.

Abbate had been with the Nevada State Police since December 2013 and had been promoted to sergeant prior to his death. According to Fox News, Felix had previously served in the United States Air Force and had joined the Nevada State Police in January 2019.

It was stated by the Nevada State Police that, "Sergeant Abbate and Trooper Felix lived their lives dedicated to serving the State of Nevada with unwavering commitment and dignity. The Nevada State Police offers sincere condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of our fallen heroes."
