Nevada driver registered at 131 mph while drunk on highway
Nevada State Police (NSP) arrested hundreds of drivers during the Memorial Day weekend, one of whom was caught traveling at 131 MPH. One of these arrested individuals was also charged with driving while intoxicated. Authorities informed Las Vegas TV station KTNV about the situation.
If it's a first-time DUI charge in Nevada, the penalties may include:
- 2 to 6 months in jail
- $400–$1,000 in fines and court costs
- License suspension up to 185 days
- Performing community service for several days
Those who have already been convicted of DUI could face harsher penalties if they're charged again.
For example, a third DUI offense within seven years is considered a felony. This might result in 1 to 6 years in state prison and fines ranging from $2,000 to $5,000.
Over the three-day stretch starting on Friday, troopers from Nevada and California issued a total of 437 citations for speeding and other offenses during the special interstate enforcement.
Most of the arrests took place on I-15 between St. Rose Parkway and the Nevada state line.
A representative from NSP told KTNV that there were no fatalities on I-15 throughout the holiday weekend due to the intensified enforcement.
Stringent Against Speeding
"This stretch of Interstate 15 was previously known as one of the most dangerous highways in the country," a spokesperson for NSP said in an interview with KTNV.
The intense enforcement operation was carried out in collaboration between NSP and California Highway Patrol.
"This weekend, we had a zero-tolerance policy for speeding, distracted, and impaired driving, shoulder runners, and so on," the spokesperson added in their conversation with KTNV. "We enforced even the slightest traffic offenses during this holiday weekend."
On Friday, NSP warned drivers that police would be out in force looking for violators.
Stay Sober Behind the Wheel
"Please buckle up, drive carefully, and never get behind the wheel while intoxicated," NSP advised on their Facebook page. "Make sure your weekend is safe for you and others on the road."
The post also urged drivers to wear their seatbelts and adhere to the speed limit.
To further emphasize their message, NSP displayed warnings for drivers to slow down on electronic signs along the highway.
On Friday, NSP issued 325 citations. Out of these, 215 were for speeding, and two motorists were charged for driving under the influence.
Between Saturday and Monday, NSP issued 81 citations for speeding, 31 citations for other violations, and 21 warnings.
