Netherlands Police Haul American Rapper Nicki Minaj into Custody
"A spokesperson for the military police revealed that a 41-year-old woman was detained for suspected attempts to transport illegal drugs into another country. Robert Kapel confirmed the arrest, but did not disclose her identity. The investigation is ongoing," he added.
Minaj disclosed on X, a popular online service, that authorities had found cannabis in her luggage. She mentioned it belonged to one of her security staff. Minaj was en route to a UK concert scheduled for later that evening.
Minaj shared on X that she had to go to the police station to make a statement. She accused the authorities of intentionally making her late, so they could write negative articles about her.
A widely-held misconception outside the Netherlands is that drugs are legal in the country. The well-known coffee shops selling weed attract cannabis enthusiasts.
It's technically illegal in the Netherlands to use small amounts of cannabis, but police don't usually enforce the law under a 'tolerance' policy started in the 70s. Transporting the drugs to a different country is against the law.
