Might Bayern player be implicated still? - Nagelsmann refuses to raise Goretzka's expectations for the European Championships.
One of the unfortunate individuals in the DFB is Leon Goretzka.
This Bayern standout was not included by national team coach, Julian Nagelsmann, in the preliminary 27-man squad for the upcoming European Championship, which he had fought hard for in recent weeks with exceptional performances (scoring 6 goals and assisting 8 times, his best season yet). Nagelsmann phoned Goretzka to break the news to him.
Technically, Goretzka still has a slim chance of being involved in the tournament. After all, the final EM squad must be submitted to UEFA by June 7th at midnight. If any players get injured, Julian Nagelsmann might reconsider his decision.
A Chance for Leon Goretzka in the EURO 2024: A Minor Probability for the Bayern Star
Nonetheless, Nagelsmann shocked many with his choice to include U21 national players, Bajran Grulic (19) from Mainz 05 and Gladbach's midfielder, Rocco Reitz (21). These two athletes are expected to showcase their skills at the EM training camp in Blankenhain, Thuringia. The coach claims that he has expanded the training camp team because some of his selected A-national players won't join the tournament preparations until later. Furthermore, Leverkusen's champions (Tah, Andrich, Wirtz) won't arrive until Wednesday, and Champions League finalists from Real Madrid (Kroos, Rudiger) and Dortmund (Schlottmann, Füllkrug) won't be there until later in the week. Consequently, Grulic and Reitz will once again have to leave.
If any of the nominated stars sustain injuries, there's a prospect for Grulic and Reitz to become last-minute picks for the EM - or even Leon Goretzka. Nagelsmann has little hope for him at the moment.
