Bayern wins big against Würzburg in Playoff Semifinals!
FC Bayern Basketball dominates with a 91-76 victory against Würzburg Baskets at the BMW-Park.
Bayern's first game in the Semifinals is won by their star players, coached by Pablo Laso (54). The team's eyes are set on the final.
Bayern starts off strong: NBA champion Serge Ibaka (34) scores five points in just two minutes, leaving Würzburg struggling to catch up. The Bayern team remains calm, focused, and delighted as the first quarter ends with a score of 21-11.
Würzburg arrives at BMW Park at a disadvantage: Their league MVP, Oti Livingston (27), tears his meniscus in the knee during the first quarterfinals, leaving him out of the game. Despite finishing fifth in the league and qualifying for playoffs, this is a significant achievement for Würzburg since 2012. They made it to the BBL semifinals back then, but were defeated by Ulm (0:3). Now, underdog Ulm has been knocked out in the quarterfinals (3:1).
Munich's Show of Strength
A miracle still hangs in the balance (for now)!
Bayern also has to contend with injuries, missing their stars, Sylvain Francisco (26/knee) and Nick Weiler-Babb (28/Wade). Fortunately, world champion Niels Giffey (32) is unstoppable, even playing with a mask. In the quarterfinal match-up against Ludwigsburg, Bayern's star player, Niels Giffey, broke his nose after colliding with teammate Leandro Bolmaro.
Points come from Serge Ibaka (11) and Carsen Edwards (7) in the first half.
And Bayern President Herbert Hainer (69) is cheering from the sidelines.
However, mistakes begin to creep in for the Bayern, their dominance at the basket starts to wane.
Will Würzburg make a comeback?
With just four minutes left, Würzburg is only eleven points behind. Will it become an exciting game? Nope. In the end, Ibaka's routine seals the deal for Bayern. Famously known for his contributions, Ibaka scores 18 points with four rebounds. Carsen Edwards (15) and Niels Giffey (12 points) also top the scorer list.
Serge Ibaka at DYN: "We did a great job, we were aggressively assertive at the start. That's what made a difference. I always help, whether in offense or defense."
Würzburg's Max Ugrai: "The second half gave us a bit of confidence. However, there was a clear difference in class, especially in the first half."
The second Playoff Semifinal game against Würzburg Baskets takes place at the BMW-Park in Munich on Friday (8:30 pm, live on Dyn/AD).
Ibaka, Edwards, and Giffey lead Bayern to a comfortable victory over Würzburg.
