Multiple shootings at MGM Resorts in Las Vegas - report

According to unconfirmed witnesses, 30 to 40 shots were fired Sunday morning, possibly on a balcony of the MGM Signature Tower in Las Vegas.

No one appeared to be injured in the shooting at the property off the Las Vegas Strip.

A person of interest was arrested late Sunday morning. He was identified as Jon Letzkus, 45, Las Vegas television station KLAS reported.

There is no additional risk to residents. The motive for the shooting is unclear.

The violence was reported to authorities around 6 a.m. PT as an active shooter, KLAS reported.

The incident occurred in the 100 block of Harmon Avenue, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. It is located east of the Las Vegas Strip, near the MGM Grand.

Evacuation Report

The incident led to the Signature Tower building being cordoned off and there were reports of evacuations, according to national news website BNN Breaking.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) SWAT team members and other officers responded to the scene. Witnesses reported seeing about 30 police cars and an ambulance outside Signature Tower.

LVMPD announced the shooting on social media shortly after 7 a.m. PT.

Harmon Avenue is closed to the public between Las Vegas Boulevard and Koval Lane. Police advise pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area.

LVMPD officers likely quickly made contact with Signature Tower security personnel. Surveillance video was reviewed.

Security and LVMPD officers spoke with guests and employees to determine what happened inside the hotel.

Since Sunday is New Year's Eve, it was unclear as of 11 a.m. PT whether the complex's holiday entertainment and dining would go ahead as planned.

New Year’s Eve Event

New Year's Eve events in Las Vegas are expected to draw 356,000 visitors to the city, according to the Review-Journal. With locals also joining in on the festivities, Las Vegas expects about 400,000 revelers to attend various events in 2024.

One of the main attractions is the fireworks show "More in '24", scheduled to take place on the Las Vegas Strip around midnight.

More than 12 carats of gold fireworks will be set off during the eight-minute show.

Fireworks will be set off from the rooftops of nine Las Vegas hotels, including the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, according to KLAS.

I have reached out to MGM Resorts for immediate comment. A spokesperson referred questions to LVMPD.
