Papua New Guinea: A Country Analysis - Multiple fatalities occur due to a landslide.
Approximately 100 people are believed to have perished. ABC and the Daily Times report that a landslide engulfed the village of Kaokalam around 3 a.m. locally. Elizabeth Laruma, a representative for the authorities, is cited as saying that many houses were obliterated.
"To the best of my knowledge, over 100 individuals are buried beneath the ground," Laruma stated.
