MSG Sphere in Las Vegas proposes to harvest 70% of its energy from the sun
Sphere Entertainment hopes to source 70 percent of the electricity needed for its soon-to-open MSG Sphere from the sun. The plan was unveiled Thursday in a 25-year proposal.
Solar power will power most of the nightly light shows and other entertainment at the $2.3 billion venue. The opening ceremony is scheduled for September 29, with a residency from U2.
"From the beginning, we designed Sphere to minimize its environmental impact and help create sustainable operations for the future," Rich Claffey, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Sphere Entertainment, said in a press release. "We designed Sphere to minimize its environmental impact and help create a sustainable operation for the future." We are proud to enter into this agreement with NV Energy and work with them to achieve these two important goals."
Nothing can compare to the sun
Las Vegas utility Nevada Energy would build a new dedicated solar field, called the Sierra Solar Project, and a separate battery storage complex for the sphere, according to the proposal, which still requires Nevada Approval from the Public Utilities Commission is required to move forward. .
Until these resources are completed, the Sphere’s power will come from existing non-renewable energy sources, and the operators have indicated that they will voluntarily purchase renewable energy credits from NV Energy to mitigate the impact of using these energy sources.
Omitted from the document is the amount of energy generated by the new resource and the price the Sphere will pay. Nevada law and Commission regulations allow companies to complete rate and usage estimates.
Previous reports that the venue would use 150 terawatt hours (terawatt hours) of energy per year were incorrect. In 2022, the entire United States generated 4,243 terawatt-hours of electricity. No, Sphere does not require 3.5% of all energy produced in the United States to operate.
NV Energy has given the commission until February 2, 2024 to comply with the requirement.
