Motormouth Max Verstappen starts at Las Vegas F1 Grand Prix
Max Verstappen insulted the race he was expected to win on Saturday night. The three-time Formula One champion described the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix as "99 percent show and 1 percent sport," according to ESPN .
Of the circuit on the Las Vegas Strip, which has 17 corners and nearly two kilometers of straights, Verstappen explained on Wednesday: "Yeah, it's not very fun. There aren't many corners, to be honest."
I don't find this very exciting, that's the only thing. I think the street circuit is not that exciting for me, especially with these new cars, they are too heavy,” the 26-year-old Belgian said later.
To add insult to injury, Verstappen later skipped the VIP opening party at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, to which F1 president Stefano Domenicali had invited all the drivers.
Without Verstappen he
Wednesday night's opening session seemed to spoil Verstappen's mood. These include drone displays, fireworks and solo musical performances from Keith Urban, Kylie Minogue and Journey.
There was also a section where all 20 riders emerged two at a time from a giant box on pit road in the drizzle. As each person was introduced to the crowd, they were instructed to wave.
Verstappen also said it made him feel like a "clown".
"I'm not going to pretend either," Verstappen explained his passivity, again via ESPN. "I always have my opinion on things, both positive and negative. That's just how I am. Some people prefer the show. I don't like it at all. I grew up focusing on the performance aspect and that's how I see it.
"So I love being in Vegas, but not so much racing."
Who is listening?
Verstappen said he doesn't think his opinion of the Las Vegas race matters.
"I don't know, I guess they're still making money whether I like it or not, so it's not up to me," he said. "We're not stakeholders, so we just go along with it. They decide what they do, right?
“If I were an owner, I would do the same thing,” he concluded. "I'm not going to listen to the driver. It's my sport and if that's the case, I'm going to do what I want with it."
Verstappen is expected to win his 18th F1 race of the season and his sixth consecutive race when the race gets underway at 10pm. Saturday.
