Movement of people from one area to another - More Than 10,000 Crossings Observed in the English Channel This Year

Approximately 10,000 individuals have made it to the UK via the English Channel in 2023 so far, according to the British news agency PA, who shared this information from the Home Office in London. This means that the year 2023 could potentially break the 2022 record when over 9,300 individuals crossed the stretch of water between France and England within the first five months.

This development presents a challenge for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government, given that this issue was a key part of their campaign during the upcoming July 4 general election. They had promised to "stop the boats," but with people continuing to make the dangerous crossing, this plan might not be as successful as they had hoped. The Conservative government recently pushed through a law in parliament that intends to allow the deportation of irregular immigrants to Rwanda, regardless of their country of origin.

The human rights group Amnesty International responds by describing the asylum agreement with Rwanda as both unlawful and immoral. They further argue that the current migration statistics undermine the effectiveness of this particular approach, instead advocating for a legal pathway for asylum seekers to enter the UK.
