Mohegan brings Michael Jordan to $1.6 billion Inspire integrated resort in South Korea

Mohegan is about to launch an integrated casino resort called Inspire, bringing one of the world’s most recognized and popular sports stars to South Korea.

Mohegan, formerly known as Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, is the business arm of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut. The tribe owns and operates its flagship resort, Mohegan Sun, in its home state, and outside of its home state, Mohegan owns and/or operates casinos in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Pennsylvania and Washington. Mohegan also operates two casinos in Ontario.

The company’s largest and most significant investment outside the United States to date is in South Korea. Mohegan has been building integrated resorts for several years at Incheon International Airport, Seoul's main air transportation hub.

Inspire is expected to open before the end of the year and will feature three five-star hotels with 1,275 rooms, a 15,000-seat multi-purpose arena, conference and event facilities, retail outlets, and extensive entertainment and dining options , and a casino open only to foreigners.

MJ flies to South Korea

Mohegan announced the launch of its first restaurant for Inspire this week, with one of the world's biggest sports stars highlighting the portfolio.

Mohegan said Inspire will feature Michael Jordan’s Steak House and MJ23 Sports Bar & Grill. Both concepts come from longtime partner Cornerstone Restaurant Group in Mohegan, Connecticut.

Jordan, a six-time NBA champion and five-time MVP, owns steakhouses at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and Ilani Casino in Washington, the latter of which is also operated by Mohegan. Cornerstone also brings two new original concepts to Inspire, including Hi-Fi Chicken & Beer and Brasserie 1783.

Hi-Fi Chicken & Beer is a casual dinner serving Korean fried chicken and cold beer in a casual atmosphere with classic stereo and records. Brasserie 1783 is a French-inspired restaurant with an "iconic hot air balloon bar" and a large outdoor terrace. "1783" refers to the year when the first hot air balloon flight took place.

Mohegan has had such an extraordinary and productive relationship with Cornerstone Restaurant Group, and we are very excited about this new project that Mohegan Inspire is working on,” said Ray Pineault, Mohegan President and CEO.

Michael Jordan’s Steak House and MJ23 Sports Bar & Grill are two of Mohegan Sun’s most popular restaurants, Pineault added.

“It’s very exciting to bring these two concepts to Korea along with a completely new concept,” Pino added.

INSPIRED AMENITIES

Mohegan officials hope to attract more than 4 million guests to Inspire annually. In addition to the hotel and casino, Inspire will feature a year-round indoor water dome, outdoor family park, spa, fitness center, family park and immersive "digital streets" that light up every half hour.

The indoor water playground will cover more than 100,000 square meters and will feature an “exotic, nature-rich pool environment under a glass dome”.

More restaurant announcements are expected. The Mohegan Sun integrated resort offers more than 40 dining options, ranging from fine dining to fast casual and grab-and-go dining.
