Large-scale operation at a popular tourist beach - Missing swimmer prompts search efforts on Usedom.
The cause: an extensive search operation for a lost swimmer!
Per the "Ostsee Zeitung", fishermen are said to have spotted an elderly woman at the level of the fishing reef in Zinnowitz (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). After these men had momentarily turned away, the woman was gone from the water. To start with, lifeguards with inflatable boats scoured the area for the woman.
Further reinforcements were dispatched, and the rescue operations were initiated.
More than 50-60 rescue workers arrived to assist in the search and contributed to finding the missing woman. Fire departments from Wolgast, Ückeritz, and Zinnowitz, the German Salvage Association, and the Water Police present, launched their boats. A rescue helicopter was also called in.
Misleading sighting led to massive operation on Usedom
Later on, a police helicopter hovered over the seaside resort of Zinnowitz and looked for potential swimmers with an infrared camera - unsuccessfully.
The "Ostsee Zeitung" goes on to say that the helicopters were pulled back around 5:00 p.m. An officer from the police stated that the search had ended as there was no official report of a missing person.
At present, there's no missing person report filed with the police.
