"About to erupt into a fight" - Miroslav Klose discloses conflict with Jerome Boateng.
In the "Spielmacher" podcast, Miroslav Klose, the World Cup's all-time top scorer with 16 goals, reminisces about a fierce training match with defender Jérôme Boateng. Klose recalls, "We both wanted to win that training game really badly. Boateng straddled me twice, and then we had a go at each other."
The intense rivalry between these two players didn't negatively impact the DFB team, as they achieved great success.
Klose recounts, "I liked it that we were all doing whatever it took to win, aiming for the title. We needed to train hard." The team accomplished big wins, such as 4:0, 2:2, 1:0 in the preliminaries, 2:1 in the round of 16, and prominent victories against France (1-0), Brazil (7-1), and Argentina (1-0).
During an interview with Die Welt in 2018, Klose mentioned the positive team dynamic during the World Cup. "It was fantastic. Everything was spot-on: the camp and the camaraderie. It was a great experience," he said.
The national team players resided together in four shared flats during the tournament. Klose, one of the janitors, noted the importance of choosing roommates who would keep quiet during the night, like goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, midfielder Toni Kroos, and attacker Mario Götze. He revealed, "I was glad I could select those I knew would keep it down. I wouldn't have been able to sleep well if someone like Mesut Özil or Jerome Boateng was in my flat. (chuckles)."
Klose managed to score two goals in the tournament, securing the record for the most goals. After the World Cup, he retired from the national team with a remarkable record of 71 goals in 137 games for Germany.
