Minister instructs to equip Taurus missiles.

Boris Pistorius (64, SPD), the country's Minister of Defense, is facing intense pressure from his MPs to finally provide the Bundeswehr with necessary weapons, such as missiles, cruise missiles, and artillery shells, for potential deployment. This is an unusual move.

Traffic signal attendants criticize Pistorius - Minister instructs to equip Taurus missiles.

The Budget Committee, at the behest of the SPD, FDP, and Green budget holders, informed the Minister of Defense that guided missiles are crucial for Germany's defense capabilities. They emphasized the importance of upgrading the inactive missiles in the Bundeswehr arsenal to make them operational for the German military as a matter of priority.

The Committee issued a resolution on this issue, requiring the following actions:

✔️ The Pistorius House should present a timetable by September 30, informing the defense budget rapporteurs about when it can fully establish the operational capability of all missiles in the Bundeswehr's weapons inventory.

✔️ Concurrently, the Ministry must submit a detailed cost estimate of the total expenses related to this process.

✔️ Starting from September 30, the Ministry must provide a written update to the rapporteurs every six months on the progress of the upgrading process, restoring operational capability to all missiles.

This decision, approved during the Budget Committee's recent session, is regarded as a harsh reproach to the minister and the deficiencies in terms of armament.

During the debate about a potential Taurus delivery to Ukraine, MPs discovered that the Bundeswehr has 600 of these crucial cruise missiles in storage, but only 300 of them are operational, while the remaining 300 require modernization. Despite this urgent need, the Bundeswehr has not yet made any efforts to prepare the Taurus missiles for an emergency.

The manufacturer revealed that there is still no contract for modernizing the outdated Taurus missiles. According to previous estimates, this would entail a significant cost in the millions.

The proposal of the Ampel budgets was deemed "appropriate and necessary." This consensus led to CDU/CSU MPs supporting the motion as well. Gädechens stated, "If Pistorius refuses to voluntarily move towards achieving war capability, then Parliament must provide guidance."
