Exciting license drama! - Millions demanded by HSV handball athletes.

It's official! A license celebration at HSV!

The HSV handball players are celebrating a monumental victory - off the field.

However, with a condition that the club has to demonstrate a security measure in the millions by 5th June 2024 (8 PM). The presiding judge, Richter Wieschemann, declared this following over six-and-a-half hours of deliberation. The arbitration court then reversed the decision of the licensing commission on 3rd May.

The commission had granted the license on 17th April but with a condition that the HSV must bridge a liquidity gap in millions by 3rd May 2024 (12 PM). The Bundesliga club managed to close the gap through Philip Müller's investment - but the €4.1 million didn't hit the account until 13:06. The commission considered it late - license revoked.

HSV, with Sebastian Frecke as managing director, lawyers Helge-Olaf Käding and André van de Velde, as well as goalkeeper Jogi Bitter and captain Niklas Weller, were present. After the appeal was denied, the club invoked the arbitration court, attaching a 45-page document (90 pages annex).

Celebrate! The arbitration court deemed the commission's condition legally non-binding and rescinded it, as it did not fully adhere to the HBL's statutes and regulations. Simultaneously, the court saw itself as responsible and allowed to make its own licensing decision - with a new condition.

A security measure in millions!

As van de Velde cheerily declared, "We got the Levites!" Käding, another lawyer, added, "There's still some work to be done." Weller, who participated in the complaint, coolly stated, "We're going home with a lot more than we came here with." With the license in sight ...

"With maximum tension in the last few days, there's a sense of relief. The court's verdict is an achievement for us. We'll give it our all to fulfill the new condition on time by Wednesday," said HSV’s managing director, Sebastian Frecke.

HBL managing director Frank Bohmann views the verdict not as a blow to the HBL: "The chairman's word says it all. I don't see this as a defeat for the HBL. The commission's guidelines were specifically confirmed by the arbitration court. The focus was on the formalities. However, the way the HBL operated was correct, and we couldn't make a different decision at this moment."
