German successorship under debate - Milan fires their coach.
Milan and Stefano Pioli have concluded their partnership, according to a statement published on the club's website on Friday. The announcement lauded Pioli and his staff for their five-year tenure at the helm of the first team, during which Milan gained an unrivaled league championship and maintained a consistent presence in Europe's leading club competitions.
Pioli's contract with the Rossoneri was set to last another season. He assumed the position of coach in October 2019 and achieved his most significant accomplishment in 2022, leading the Rossoneri to their 19th Italian league title. In a display of his dedication, Pioli got the number 19 inked on his left forearm following the championship celebrations. While further titles eluded him, Milan's bow in the Serie A runners-up race failed to retain the trust of the club's management.
Additionally, the team could not advance to the Champions League group stage this season, falling short to the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
Potential Replacements for Pioli at AC Milan
In their search for a new coach, AC Milan has reportedly explored the possibility of hiring Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller (43). However, he has made it clear that he intends to remain with Frankfurt. Instead, Roberto De Zerbi (44), recently sacked from Brighton, is an option under consideration, although staying in the Premier League is his first priority.
The Italian club may have found a potential candidate in Paulo Fonseca (51) of LOSC Lille. Preliminary discussions have taken place, and it is believed that Fonseca is keenly interested in the Milan project and is available for free transfer in the summer.
