The Cannes-screened film "Anora" receives attention. - Mikey Madison takes on the role as a modern-day "Pretty Woman".

What we have here is the basic outline of the Cannes movie "Anora," which recently won the prestigious "Golden Palm" award for best film at the French Riviera's film festival. But wait a second, doesn't this story sound familiar?

Let's take a trip down memory lane back to the year 1990. That's when a romantic comedy with the following plot caught everyone's attention: A prostitute gets together with a rich businessman. He invites her to spend a night and then a week with him before falling in love. You've guessed it - I'm talking about "Pretty Woman!" Back then, the leading lady was a young Julia Roberts (currently 56 years old), and her replacement now is Mikey Madison (25).

Cannes is going wild with excitement as they celebrate the newest champion at the most renowned film event in the world. Why are they so thrilled? Because American director Sean Baker (51, known for "The Florida Project") shows that you don't need a gargantuan budget of 200 million euros to make an exceptional film.

"Anora" supposedly cost mere millions over two euros. In Hollywood terms, that's not a lot of money, but it's filled with so much more!

Kult-Film aus dem Jahr 1990: Richard Gere und Julia Roberts in „Pretty Woman“

For 138 minutes, Mikey Madison's character, Anora, steals everyone's hearts - not just that of Ivan, the oligarch's son (played by Russian newcomer Mark Eidelstein, 22). Yep, even that bit reminds us of "Pretty Woman." While in the former movie, there were clothes to try on, in "Anora," they're peeled off instead.

In the first 45 minutes, "Anora" feels like a modern take on the fairy tale of the girl meeting her supposed prince charming. Similarities to "Pretty Woman" are apparent. However, around the 45-minute mark, "Anora" takes flight: Ivan marries Anora to avoid having to return to his parents. When they find out, they quickly rush to New York to annul the marriage... Does the film have a happy ending?

We'll likely get to see that soon in our theaters as well. The release date for "Anora" in German cinemas is still unclear, though.
