Michigan Powerball wins $842 million jackpot, fifth largest in the game
Monday was a great start to the new year for one lucky Powerball player in Michigan.
The Powerball jackpot has eluded players in 34 consecutive draws since mid-October, with one ticket sold in Michigan covering the five white balls drawn during Monday night's drawing and Red power ball. The winning numbers were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 and the red Powerball was 1. Power Play multiplier is 3x.
Holders of the sole winning jackpot ticket can choose to pay the full value of the advertised jackpot over 29 years or choose a one-time cash option of approximately $425.2 million. Prices exclude federal and state taxes.
“It’s an incredible start to the new year for Powerball,” said Drew Svitko, chairman of Powerball Products Group and executive director of the Pennsylvania Lottery. “In addition to our grand prize winners, there are hundreds of good causes supported by America’s Lottery that will receive additional funds through this jackpot event.”
After the federal government cuts the effective tax rate on the nation's top earners by 37% and Michigan imposes a 4.25% state tax, the winner will receive about $496.2 million from the annuity, or $249.8 million in cash.
