MGM inks a sports betting deal with Yahoo!
The famous gambling empire MGM Resorts, based in Las Vegas, has partnered with Yahoo!, a renowned New York-based internet service provider, for a multi-year collaboration. This alliance concentrates on the association between MGM's betting platform BetMGM and Yahoo!'s sports website and smartphone app. The boons from this deal?
Focus on Live Events
Americans interested in sports betting can get ready for an exclusive collaboration between BetMGM and Yahoo! Sports. These two companies have declared that Yahoo! Sports is now MGM Resorts' official "Digital Media Sports Partner." This arrangement is entirely in sync with Verizon Media's primary strategy, which envisions fusing sports content with gambling transactions in the days to come. Though one would not be placing bets directly on the Yahoo! platform, they would be able to access sports betting platforms more quickly by clicking on BetMGM links.
The management is excited about the deal and hails it as a "natural extension of our mission to enhance Yahoo! Sports for sports aficionados with unmatched experiences." Roar Digital is the new brand created through a joint venture between MGM and GVC, and a significant part of this collaboration is joining forces to form captivating content at live events.
Adam Greenblatt, Roar Digital's CEO, commented on the deal, saying, "This is an exciting partnership for the BetMGM brand and Roar Digital, enabling us to reach the broadest possible audience of passionate sports fans in the US."
Yahoo! Sports App's Propitious Trajectory
As per the agreement, there will be a link leading from the new MGM betting brand to the Yahoo! sports site as well as the Yahoo! smartphone app. The US version of the Yahoo! Sports mobile app has witnessed a growth rate higher than 68% year-over-year. This app can be downloaded from both iOS and Google Play.
Greenblatt noted that Yahoo! Sports app's 60 million monthly users in the US and "Yahoo! Fantasy Football's 9 billion minutes of user time annually" can create a captivating duo. It is therefore no surprise that over 20 significant sports marketing and promotional activities are anticipated. MGM Resorts will also promote Yahoo! sports content via its real estate properties and online platforms. Furthermore, several live events are scheduled to be held at MGM's Las Vegas properties. MGM generated headlines recently with its intentions for casino sales.
Gathering Momentum in Sports Betting and Fantasy Sports
The resultant offering is extensive: The Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) product run by Yahoo! will become part of the MGM plan permanently. With both companies' extensive reach, MGM CEO Jim Murren characterizes the partnership as "historic." As the CEO pointed out in a press release, the BetMGM assimilation is expected to conclude as soon as November. The quoted statement also mentions, "This partnership is a monumental moment for BetMGM in the burgeoning US sports betting market. Integrating Yahoo's preeminent fantasy sports offerings and content along with BetMGM's top-notch interactive sports betting platform will enable us to capture market share and elevate adoption among sports enthusiasts. The experience will span various global sports, including basketball, ice hockey, soccer, college sports, baseball, soccer, golf, and tennis."
Yahoo! as an Affiliate Partner
Murren is echoed by Guru Gowrappan, the CEO of Verizon Media, who underlined the importance of consumer interaction for Yahoo!. According to Gowrappan, Yahoo! will not earn money directly from the joint enterprise through sports betting, instead functioning as an affiliate partner. Consequently, Yahoo! will primarily benefit from the advertising of BetMGM properties. Given the expansive potential audience, this seems a worthwhile venture. Gowrappan, in his opinion, asserted:
"The historic partnership between Yahoo Sports and BetMGM will revolutionize the way fans experience sports beyond flat content. We, at Verizon Media, strongly believe in creating products that help connect consumers to their passions and subsequently supply the maximum value."
Approval from the NBA & NHL
The collaboration between MGM and Yahoo! has also been endorsed by the two most significant US sports leagues. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, "As sports betting evolves the landscape, this partnership unites the influence of two dependable partners of the NBA." He continued, "By collaborating, MGM Resorts and Yahoo! Sports will render fans unique ways to connect with our games."
The enthusiasm is far from a coincidence. Since the legalization of sports betting in May 2018, the regulating power has resided with the individual states, with over 18 states enacting such legislation so far. The market, estimated to be worth billions, is vigorously contested by several international gaming enterprises. Meanwhile, the world's most successful basketball league announced a deal with Tabcorp last week. Aside from the Australian sports betting market leader securing distribution rights for the league's own NBA TV channel, the NBA has also inked deals with entities like FanDuel and DraftKings. However, this pact is novel, as the NHL has yet to form a similar alliance.
Furthermore, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman made a statement showing his backing. He mentioned that the expanding sports betting climate in the USA presents "intriguing chances to heighten fan participation and use advanced technologies". Bettman also pointed out that MGM is already a "prized ally of the NHL" and that working together with Yahoo! would thus create a "top-notch media brand that bonds fans to the thrill on the ice through exciting methods".
