Leipzig's Central Area - Melee involving a machete breaks out on a street!

In a violent altercation on Eisenbahnstraße, a man brings out a machete and attacks, resulting in injuries for two individuals. A video recorded on X (formerly known as Twitter) documents this street brawl.

Life on German Streets: Everyday Brutality

In the video, a group of approximately 12 individuals can be seen ferociously attacking each other. Heads are butted, one man lies in the street with severe bleeding. Another man is knocked down with a single powerful punch, only for a man with a machete to arrive and use the flat side of the weapon to hit a man who is lying on the floor. Shouts in Turkish can be heard. The clip lasts for almost a minute.

Police Investigation: Machete Used in Altercation

The identities of the perpetrators are now recognizable from the video. This forms a crucial starting point for the criminal investigation team. It's believed that this fight was motivated by drug-related matters and conflicts between gangs, much like many other fights on Eisenbahnstraße.

Machetes aren't a rare sight when it comes to gangs and their tools. Typically, the perpetrators use the blunt side of the machete to injure their victims but not kill them.

The "Weapons Ban Zone": A Failure?

Eisenbahnstraße, where inhabitants of various nationalities reside, has long been viewed as a crime hotspot. This area was declared a "no-weapons zone" back in 2018. Violations of this rule could potentially result in fines as high as 10,000 euros.

The Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper reported that within the first few months of the weapons ban zone, police recovered 84 knives, eight animal repellent sprayers, three stun guns, a pistol, and a revolver.

However, in 2021, the Saxon Higher Administrative Court declared the Ministry of the Interior's police ordinance banning the carrying of deadly objects in the Eisenbahnstraße area illegal. As a result, Leipzig City Council chose to scrap the weapons ban zone.(ref.: 6 C 22/19)
