Melco Resorts to phase out plastic bottles at resorts in Macau, Manila and Cyprus
Hong Kong-based Melco Resorts, which owns and operates integrated casino resorts in Macau, China, the Philippines and Cyprus, is eliminating single-use plastic bottles.
Melco Crown's portfolio includes City of Dreams, Studio City and Morpheus in Macau, City of Dreams Manila in the Philippines capital and City of Dreams Mediterranean in Cyprus.
Melco International will phase out single-use plastic bottles at all of its casino resorts and replace them with refillable glass bottles, executives said in a news release this week. Melco integrates NORDAQ’s water treatment and bottling solutions. NORDAQ is a Sweden-based company that “levers patented technology to deliver world-class, sustainable end-to-end water solutions.”
Melco Crown's press release explains that ditching plastic water bottles in favor of refillable glass bottles is part of the company's commitment to "Above and Beyond," a sustainability initiative launching in 2021.
As part of our 2025 roadmap to address the root causes of plastic pollution across our operations, we are excited to launch NORDAQ solutions across our hotels in Asia and Europe. Through these initiatives, we hope to continue to inspire our guests and show that a sustainable future is a better future. " said Lawrence Ho, founder, chairman and CEO of Melco Crown Resorts.
Mr Ho is the casino group's largest shareholder through his stake in Melco Crown International Development, the parent company of Melco Crown Resorts. Mr Ho is worth an estimated $1 billion.
NORDAQ SYSTEM
Melco Crown says the use of NORDAQ water treatment replenishment systems will prevent millions of plastic bottles from being thrown away at its casinos.
Hotels in Melco usually provide guests with two free plastic bottles of water. In the coming months, these plastic bottles will be replaced by glass bottles filled with purified water.
Melco Crown Casino will install an on-site NORDAQ water system that will purify tap water to a "completely neutral result with no taste, odor or contaminants." The company claims that the purification technology removes unwanted flavors while retaining the water's natural salts and minerals.
World Market Leader
Ho said Melco Crown Resorts is the first global hotel group and integrated resort operator to commit to eliminating plastic water bottles from its hotels. Melco is a signatory to the Global Plastics in Tourism Initiative, led by the United Nations Environment Program and the World Tourism Organization.
The United Nations Environment Program says the world is "addicted" to single-use plastic products, which has serious environmental, social, economic and health consequences. The United Nations says the world buys 1 million plastic bottles every minute and uses about 5 trillion plastic bags every year.
Around 400 million tons of plastic waste are generated globally every year, which is staggering considering that plastic is designed to be much lighter than other common packaging materials.
The United Nations Environment Program estimates that around 85% of single-use plastics are not recycled but end up in landfills or, worse yet, in the oceans as unregulated waste. The initiative estimates that there are currently up to 200 million tons of plastic waste in the world’s oceans.
