Mega Millions to host July 4th fireworks show with $400 million jackpot in today's drawing
Mega Millions does not observe holidays, which means Tuesday's interstate lottery drawing will be held as scheduled tonight at 11:00 ET.
As millions of Americans set up lawn chairs and spread out blankets to watch the sky light up with fireworks, many lottery players dreamed of striking it rich overnight. The Mega Millions jackpot in today's drawing is estimated at $400 million, with a one-time cash value of $205 million.
There were no tickets matching the five white balls and the golden giant ball in Friday's drawing. These winning numbers are 13, 22, 47, 51, 55 and Super Ball 9.
The last Mega Millions jackpot was won on April 19, when a lucky player in New York took home the $476 million annuity jackpot. Since then, there have been 22 draws without a ticket matching the six numbers drawn.
Mega Millions Lottery officials say Independence Day could take on new meaning if someone wins the jackpot tonight as financial independence changes lives.
July 4th Lottery Fireworks
Even though the Mega Millions jackpot hasn't been won in months, the odds of winning tonight's jackpot are always 1:302.5 million. Although the probability of matching all six numbers per ticket does not change, as demand increases, the chance of winning decreases because more possible lottery combinations may be covered.
Just a year ago, July also started with a mega-millionaire jackpot, ending the month on July 29 with a massive $1.3 billion jackpot. “Could history repeat itself with another exciting jackpot in July?” pondered the Mega Millions announcement.
The $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot won in the July 29, 2022 Illinois drawing was, at the time, the second-largest jackpot ever won in the game. That result was eclipsed by a player in Maine who won $1.348 billion in the Jan. 13, 2023 drawing.
If tonight's $400 million jackpot were won through a lottery, pensions would pay out about $253 million over 30 years, after federal taxes. After federal taxes, the cash option would be reduced to about $129.1 million.
Depending on where the prize is won, state taxes may further reduce winnings. Lottery taxes vary from state to state, ranging from 0% in California, Delaware, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming to as high as 10.9% in New York.
Bigger jackpot, better chance of winning
For all the players who don't win the Mega Millions jackpot tonight, Powerball is offering an even bigger jackpot, with slightly better odds of winning on July 5th. The Powerball jackpot has grown to $546 million, with a cash value of $282 million.
The odds for the Powerball jackpot are just over 1 to 292.2 million. The last Powerball win was on April 19, when a player in Ohio matched all six numbers to win $252.6 million.
