The Nagelsmann debut surpassed expectations. - Measure television viewership during the Leverkusen championship match.
Former Spanish soccer star Xabi Alonso (42) and his team, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, have been garnering a lot of attention lately...
Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the unbeaten German Bundesliga champions, experienced their first loss in 52 games on Wednesday night, as they were defeated by Atalanta Bergamo in the Europa League final. Ademola Lookman (26), a player who formerly played for Leipzig and is currently under contract with RB until 2022, scored all three goals for the Italians (12th, 26th, and 75th minutes).
During this game, an average of 7.82 million people tuned in to RTL, a free-to-air TV channel, to watch the match. This viewership is a season record for Leverkusen. RTL reported that the market share for this show was 32.4 percent.
The RTL Group owns the broadcast rights to the second most important European football tournament and has had great ratings this season, primarily due to Bayer's success. The viewership of this final surpassed the previous season's RTL soccer record of 7.47 million, which was for the match between Germany and the USA (3:1 win by Germany in October 2023). This match also marked the debut of national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36), who replaced Hansi Flick (59) in September 2023.
The Leverkusen match in Dublin delivered the highest viewers for a Europa League broadcast since Eintracht Frankfurt's victory in the final last May, which drew an average of 8.99 million viewers when they beat Glasgow Rangers after extra time and a penalty shoot-out.
RTL is scheduled to broadcast Leverkusen's championship celebrations live on Sunday (3:15 p.m.). There will also be live broadcasts on partner stations ntv (2:45 p.m.) and WDR (2:45 p.m.).
