Max Verstappen overcomes penalty and collision to win Las Vegas Grand Prix

The end of Saturday night's inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas was no surprise. Red Bull Racing favorite Max Verstappen claimed his 18th win in 21 races this season.

However, early and midway through the 50-lap race, Verstappen survived a collision and a five-second penalty in a tense race that briefly dropped him to fifth place.

Verstappen was penalized for pushing Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc's car off the track at the first corner. But five seconds was no problem for the Dutch champion. The front wing was also undamaged in the incident with Mercedes driver George Russell.

The 26-year-old Dutchman fought back effortlessly, passing Alpine's Pierre Gasly, McLaren's Oscar Piastri and then Red Bull's Sergio ·Perez and Leclerc, the two soon exchanged the lead.

Can’t Stop Verstappen

On lap 37, Leclerc finally succumbed to Verstappen's magic and then found himself in a fierce battle with Perez for second place. That was confirmed when his Ferrari overtook Perez's Honda on the final straight.

Esteban Ocon (Alpine) finished fourth, Aston Martin's Lance Stroll fifth and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz ) and Lewis Hamilton (who also had contact) finished sixth and seventh. Russell finished eighth after receiving a five-second penalty for collision with Verstappen.

Behind him, Fernando Alonso ended up ninth after his Aston Martin spun. Piastri rounded out the top ten.

McLaren's Lando Norris suffered an incident at the end of the race when he spun at high speed into the barrier and luckily ended up in the sprint area.

Verstappen already holds the record for most individual wins in a season. He laid the foundation last month in Mexico City with his 16th win of the season, breaking the record he held last year.

With one grand prix remaining in Abu Dhabi next week, Verstappen could end the season with 19 wins from 22 races, a record that no one will question in the future - except maybe Weiss. Outside Tappan.
