At the 2024 European Championship held at our residence, - Matthäus: This huge star needs to remain on the bench.

On June 14th, the German national football team will take on Scotland in the Euro 2024 tournament. Following their remarkable journey in the 2006 World Cup, both the team and fans yearn for more football magic. Lothar Matthäus (63), a former national player and now a Sky spokesperson, has some thoughts on who can bring us such magic.

He believes that Toni Kroos (33), the German record national player with 150 international matches, could be the one.

"When we consider someone who's leading by the team's support, it can only be Toni Kroos," says Matthäus. He continues, "It's unprecedented; no one has achieved this in German football history. Apart from the European Championship title, he's won everything else. And why should this not be the crowning jewel in his career? He's respected by everyone, from his own team to the opposing side, and he's fortunate to play for a country always considered a favorite. Toni, just like the past few weeks and months for him, may prove to be our greatest asset in the home EM."

Toni Kroos

Kroos recently announced his retirement this season, quickly followed by goosebumps as he considered the idea. He has played 108 international matches so far, with only Thomas Müller (128) and Manuel Neuer (117) appearing more often for the current German squad.

Matthäus also believes that Kroos' comeback to the national team would affect another player who may need to sit on the bench.

"In my opinion, Gündoğan is not a sure thing. That's also due to Toni Kroos' return, who will undoubtedly play. Had Nagelsmann not brought him back, it would've been Gündoğan's spot."

"It's also his performance and Barcelona's performance this season that has been lackluster compared to his time at Manchester City," Matthäus adds. Since transferring last summer, Gündoğan has been part of 51 games for Barcelona.

Droht DFB-Kapitän Gündogan die Bank?

Matthäus is also adamant about their expectations for the summer. "To truly create a fairytale, we need to win the title." The event is just over two weeks away now.
