Mastering the Irish Poker Drinking Game: Instruction

The Irish poker drinking game is an enjoyable activity that's simple to learn and can be played anywhere with a regular deck of cards and some friends. Should you be unaware, this game is different from actual poker, where people play for money and is not recommended to be played while intoxicated, as it can lead to poor decisions.

This game is perfect for those seeking a fun card game that involves some drinking.

How to Play the Irish Poker Drinking Game

What's great about this game is that it doesn't need much effort or time to set up, making it an ideal choice for any occasion. All you'll require are a standard deck of cards and willing participants.

If you're thinking of playing with a larger group, you'll need another deck of cards, as a single deck can cater to up to 13 people.

Let's assume you're playing with four individuals. Here's how a typical round of play would go:

Round 1 – Red or Black?

Every fourth player is dealt four cards, which they keep face-down. Once everyone has four cards, the player to the dealer's left starts and guesses whether their first face-down card is red or black.

Once they've made their guess, they flip the card over to check whether they're correct. If so, they get to decide which other three players take a sip or shot. If they're wrong, they take two sips or shots themselves.

This cycle continues till all participants have made their guesses.

Round 2 – Higher or Lower?

In this round, the player on the dealer's right goes first and guesses whether their second card has a higher or lower value than the card they flipped in the first round.

Since this is the second round, if you make a correct prediction, you get to select four players to drink. If not, you consume four sips or shots. In the case of drawing the same card from the first round, you must also take a sip or shot.

Make your way through all players.

While traditional rules indicate that aces should be considered high, feel free to change this if you and your group agree.

Round 3 – Inside or Outside?

In this round, you have to determine if your third card's value is within the range of your first two cards, which are now visible.

To progress to the next stage, if you correctly forecast the value of your third card, you choose six players to take a sip or shot. If you're wrong, you have to knock back six shots or sips yourself.

Continue to cycle through all players.

Round 4 – Which Suit?

This round usually leaves players intoxicated, as you need to identify the suit of your final card. Make an educated decision based on the visible cards others have.

If you're correct, you distribute eight sips or shots among the other players. If not, you're the one who has to drink eight shots or sips.

Adjusting the Rules

You can create your set of rules or play variations to spice things up.

Adjust the number of sips or shots given or lost for each round. Or, create a rule stating that a certain card or suit rewards or penalizes participants.

Before you start, please remember to drink responsibly. The Irish poker drinking game can be pretty intensive when it comes to alcohol consumption. Therefore, you should exercise restraint, particularly when using stronger alcohol, to ensure the comfort of everyone involved.

And don't forget to share!
